Ambassador Reuben Brigety, former US Representative to African Union, joins MA Board of Counselors

We are pleased to welcome Reuben Brigety, former US Representative to the African Union, to our Board of Counselors.  The McLarty Associates Board helps ensure that we and our clients have access to the very best insights from respected statesmen and women who have served their governments at senior levels in key markets around the world.

Ambassador Brigety is currently Dean of the Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University.  Prior to being named US Representative to the African Union in 2013, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs, with responsibility for Southern Africa and regional security affairs.  He is a graduate of the US Naval Academy.

Ambassador Brigety’s broad experience working with both government and private sector actors across Africa will support our Africa practice in helping companies to seize opportunities in some of the world’s fastest-growing economies.  MA’s Africa team includes former US government officials who have helped craft US-Africa policy at the highest levels, as well as business advisors with decades of regional experience in key sectors such as retail, commodities, and telecommunications.  This enables us to craft winning market entry and expansion strategies for companies throughout the region.

About Ambassador Brigety

Reuben E. Brigety II served from 2013 to 2015 as the appointed Representative of the United States to the African Union and Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN Economic Commission for Africa.  Currently, he serves as the Dean of the Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University in Washington, DC.

Ambassador Brigety previously served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of African Affairs from 2011 to 2013, with responsibility for Southern Africa and Regional Security Affairs.  Prior to that, he was Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration.  In that capacity he supervised US refugee programs in Africa and managed US humanitarian diplomacy with major international partners.

Prior to his work at the State Department, Ambassador Brigety was Director of the Sustainable Security Program at the Center for American Progress.  He has served as a Senior Advisor to the US Central Command Assessment Team in Washington and Doha, Qatar, and conducted research missions in Afghanistan and Iraq with Human Rights Watch.  As an active duty US naval officer, he held several staff positions in the Pentagon and in fleet support units.

Ambassador Brigety is a graduate of the US Naval Academy, where he earned a BS in political science, and also holds an M.Phil and Ph.D. in international relations from the University of Cambridge.  He is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies and the Council on Foreign Relations.
