Arturo Sarukhan, former Mexican Ambassador to the US, joins McLarty Inbound

I am delighted to announce that Arturo Sarukhan, former Mexican Ambassador to the United States, is now supporting our McLarty Inbound practice as Senior Advisor.

McLarty Inbound is a wholly owned subsidiary of McLarty Associates designed to help foreign companies seeking to do business in the United States.  We also assist with high-level commercial and political negotiations, as well as dealing with sensitive regulatory issues including the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) and the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC). 

During his six years as Mexico’s ambassador in Washington, Ambassador Sarukhan developed one of the strongest networks in the Administration and Congress of any ambassador.  His years of experience navigating complex cross-border trade issues will help enhance McLarty Inbound’s ability to assist foreign firms investing in the US.  We look forward to drawing upon his far-reaching connections in Washington and across the United States, throughout the Americas, and around the world.  Ambassador Sarukhan will base in our Washington, DC office.

Arturo Sarukhan

Arturo Sarukhan is Senior Advisor to our McLarty Inbound practice.

A career ambassador, he served from 2007 to 2013 as Mexico’s Ambassador to the United States.  During his tenure as Ambassador, he developed an extensive network of relationships with US government officials in the administration and Congress, as well as at the state and local levels, and counseled numerous foreign companies seeking to do business in the US.  Ambassador Sarukhan oversaw Mexico’s entry into the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations, and was named Dean of the Group of Latin American Ambassadors to the US (GRULA).  Previously, he served as Mexico’s Consul-General to New York City, where he had extensive ties with the foreign and American business communities.

Ambassador Sarukhan was Foreign Policy Advisor and International Spokesperson for President Felipe Calderon’s campaign.  Prior to taking a leave of absence to join the campaign, he served in several key posts in the Mexican Foreign Service, including as Chief of Policy Planning at the Foreign Ministry, Chief of Staff at the Mexican Embassy in Washington, and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Inter-American Affairs.

Ambassador Sarukhan serves on the boards of the Americas Society, the Inter-American Dialogue and the National Immigration Forum, as well as numerous task forces with NGOs, think tanks and academic institutions.  He is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the USC Annenberg Public Diplomacy School.  Ambassador Sarukhan holds a B.A. in International Relations from El Colegio de México and an M.A. in U.S. Foreign Policy from the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of Johns Hopkins University, where he was a Fulbright Scholar and Ford Foundation Fellow.  He has received numerous awards and honorary degrees in recognition of his public service, and has been decorated by the governments of Spain and Sweden.

 

Our McLarty Inbound Practice

McLarty Inbound, a subsidiary of McLarty Associates, assists foreign firms investing in the United States with state-of-the-art analysis and strategy and advocacy efforts in Washington.  McLarty Inbound provides foreign firms seeking to do business in the United States with help on government relations (at the federal, state, and local levels), strategic planning, market access, mergers and acquisitions, corporate communications and political and economic risk issues.

The addition of Arturo Sarukhan will strengthen our McLarty Inbound team’s ability to help companies from around the world grow their business operations in the United States.

Ambassador Sarukhan will support our McLarty Inbound leadership team that also includes:

  • Ambassador Richard Burt, Managing Director, a skilled corporate strategist with a keen sense of Washington who served in senior capacities advising Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush, including as Ambassador to Germany and chief arms negotiator with the Russians.  Previously a partner with McKinsey & Company, he has led McLarty’s Europe and Eurasia practice since 2007.  Well-versed in the Washington political and commercial worlds, Ambassador Burt has served on numerous corporate boards and brings a wealth of European and Russian corporate, nonprofit, and government ties.
  • Ambassador Jorge Guajardo, Senior Director, most recently served as Mexico’s ambassador to China and has deep ties in the Mexican and Chinese business communities.  A skilled advocate in Washington, he previously worked with two large DC public affairs firms and will help all our foreign clients maneuver in Washington.

Ambassadors Burt, Guajardo, and Sarukhan will in turn marshal all the global resources of McLarty Associates to support our foreign clients, including our regional teams that cover Latin America, Europe and Eurasia, China, East Asia and Southeast Asia, India and South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, and Africa.
