Matthieu is an associate at the Trade Practice at McLarty Associates, where he also supports clients with Northeast Asia.
He graduated with an MA in International Relations from Johns Hopkins SAIS in 2025, which included a year at SAIS Europe in Bologna, Italy. During this time, he also worked as a geopolitical risk analyst at a Washington-based political risk firm, advising clients on geopolitical and macroeconomic trends. Prior, Matthieu worked as a research assistant for the Japan Chair Programme at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London, where he focused on issues related to Indo-Pacific and European economic and traditional security. He also co-edited the Programme’s second Adelphi book “Japan and the IISS: Connecting Western and Japanese Strategic Thought from the Cold War to the War on Ukraine”. Matthieu completed additional internships at the IISS-Americas office in Washington, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University, where he majored in Regional Studies of Asia with a minor in Japanese. During this time, he spent a year studying at Waseda University in Tokyo under the Global Leadership Fellows Program. Matthieu is a native French speaker and is proficient in Japanese.
