Our Internship & Graduate Fellowship Program

Program Overview

McLarty Associates is proud to offer paid temporary positions through our Internship and Graduate Fellowship Program. We seek highly motivated students who are interested in learning more about the field of international strategic advising and who have a strong background in regional and international studies as well as economics, trade and/or business.

Interns and Graduate Fellows are an integral part of our team. The focus of the internship is on research and writing, however selected students are viewed as active participants in the entire client services process and thus get exposure beyond research.

Students who are currently attaining a Master’s degree are eligible to be a Graduate Fellow.

Our Internships and Graduate Fellowships are offered on a semester basis and are hired based on availability per regional practice:

  • Spring: January to May (applications accepted beginning in mid-November)
  • Summer: June to August (applications accepted beginning in March)
  • Fall: September to December (applications accepted beginning in July)

Associate, Southeast Asia 

McLarty Associates is seeking a bright, resourceful, highly organized individual to serve as an Associate for the firm’s Southeast Asia practice. The Southeast Asia practice associate also provides occasional administrative support to the South Asia practice.

Responsibilities for the position include: supporting the Senior Director, Directors, and Senior Advisors in daily work focused on Southeast Asia in administrative, research, and client service capacities; coordinating and maintaining Directors’ daily schedules and travel arrangements; interacting with clients, foreign and domestic government officials, and thought leaders in a professional manner; drafting memos and reports based on research and original analysis of economic, political, and security risks and opportunities in Southeast Asian markets; drafting client proposals, strategic overviews, slide decks, formal letters, and talking points for Directors; event planning and coordination; and general media monitoring of current events in the region.

Qualifications for this position include a BA/BS or MA in International Relations, Political Science, International Business or a related field—MA not required—and a demonstrated knowledge, interest in, and experience living or studying in Southeast Asia, as well as an appetite for international politics and international business broadly. Exceptional organization, verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills are necessary, as well as comfort interacting with high-level individuals and collaborating in a team environment. The ideal candidate has strong critical thinking skills, a natural inclination to take the initiative and anticipate the needs of Directors, excellent attention to detail, an ability to operate in a fast-paced work environment while maintaining a high level of professionalism and confidentiality, and an ability to work independently and with minimal supervision. This person must have proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Power Point, Excel) and strong open source research skills. Fluency in a Southeast Asian language, preferably Bahasa Indonesia or Vietnamese, is strongly desired.  Salary is commensurate with experience.

Intern/Graduate Fellow, Europe/Eurasia and McLarty Inbound 

McLarty Associates is seeking a graduate student or undergraduate senior for a paid fall internship focusing on Europe & Eurasia as well as the firm’s inbound practice. Applicants for the position should meet the following criteria:

The ideal candidate is an accomplished researcher, an excellent writer, and exceptionally organized, with an understanding of international politics, economics and trade, business, and culture. He or she should have a strong background, demonstrated interest, and experience living or studying in Europe & Eurasia. Regional language skills strongly preferred but not required. A strong background in U.S. politics at both a national and state level and knowledge of both the congressional legislative process and the Executive branch are viewed as a plus.

Responsibilities of the internship include extensive research of public policy and business issues; attending and reporting on speeches, panel discussions and policy forums of interest to the firm and clients; assisting professional staff with general office and administrative support; and a commitment to work from mid-late August through mid-late December, part-time.

Intern/Graduate Fellow, Latin America

McLarty Associates is seeking a graduate student or undergraduate senior for paid semester internship focusing on the Latin American region. Applicants for the position should meet the following criteria:

The ideal candidate is an accomplished researcher, has excellent writing skills in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, and is exceptionally organized, with an understanding of international politics, economics, business and culture. He or she should have a strong background, demonstrated interest, and experience living or studying in Latin America, as well as fluency in Spanish and Portuguese.

Responsibilities of the internship include extensive research of public policy and business issues; translation; attending and reporting on speeches, panel discussions and policy forums of interest to the firm and clients; assisting professional staff with general office and administrative support; and a commitment to work 40 hours per week from August through the end of December.
