China

Based in Washington, Beijing and Brussels, our China practice helps firms to understand and manage the evolving commercial, regulatory, reputational, and political issues related to China investment and trade. We bring hands-on business experience, political acumen, an extensive network of contacts and diplomatic skill to our work, which ranges from market entry, investment structuring, and government relations to risk evaluation/mitigation, ESG, and crisis management. Our clients come from many sectors, including ICT, industrial manufacturing, pharma, FMCG, media and entertainment, banking, insurance, retail, agribusiness, food, portfolio investment, and higher education. We also advise Chinese clients on outbound investment.

Our China work is deeply integrated with our trade practice so that our clients have the necessary inputs to navigate the tumult and complexities of the US-China trade relationship and manage the impact on their supply chains, security, IP, and related areas.

John Holden, who has spent more than 25 years doing business on the ground in Greater China and served as the president of the National Committee on US-China relations, leads our China practice.  Lihui Zhang has led our Beijing office for a dozen years, providing counsel to clients based on her extensive experience representing foreign corporate interests in China and a broad network of contacts.  The China practice is supported by the head of McLarty’s Brussels office Jeremie Gallon, whose broad understanding of global trade and investment is informed by a year doing research in China. Senior Advisor Ryan Hass, previously director for China, Taiwan, and Mongolia at the National Security Council, offers insights from his deep knowledge of China and US-China relations.

MA’s China work is supported by its chairman Thomas F. McLarty, III, a businessman who has had active investments in China for many years, and vice chair John D. Negroponte, who has engaged with senior Chinese officials from the early days of his diplomatic career to his time co-chairing the US-China Senior Dialogue.
